Research Assistant (m/f/d) – Doctoral Position for a doctorate in the field of processing and structural behaviour of thermoplastic composite sandwich structures; Ref.no.: 081/2024

09.10.2024, Stellenausschreibungen Lehre und Forschung

At Merseburg University of Applied Sciences - subject to acceptance at the Doctoral Center - the following position is to be filled in the Department of Engineering and Natural Sciences (INW) at the earliest possible date and limited until 31.12.2027:

Research Assistant (m/f/d) – Doctoral Position for a doctorate in the field of processing and structural behaviour of thermoplastic composite sandwich structures
(part-time 75%)

Around 3,000 students, 75 professors and over 350 employees shape Merseburg University of Applied Sciences as a place of modern teaching and learning, dedicated research and administration, shared encounters and well-being. As a small campus university in the south of Saxony-Anhalt, we attach great importance to creative freedom and self-determination, supported by a family atmosphere. With our three departments, we have been shaping social, cultural, economic and technical change in the region since 1992.

As part of the International Academy (InterGrad-EGD) doctoral students at the universities of applied sciences in Saxony-Anhalt are supported and supervised in scientific exchange with European universities. The common scientific topic of the Academy is the European Green Deal (EGD). In order to expand the scientific profile within the subject area of the EGD, the subject of the doctoral project at Merseburg University of Applied Sciences is the investigation of the process and structural behavior of sustainable, thermoplastic sandwich structures for use in modern transport systems. Lightweight sandwich structures are used, in the field of vehicle construction to realize flat, buckling-resistant structures with reduced component weight and thus significantly improve the efficiency of transport systems in terms of the ratio of energy consumption and payload. Innovative sandwich structures based on thermoplastics support the economic transformation towards a circular economy. Both the use of recycled plastics and the reuse of materials at the end of a component's life play an important role here.

The doctoral project is carried out in close cooperation with Professor Maik Feldmann from the Doctoral Center Engineering Sciences and Information Technologies (IWIT) at Merseburg University of Applied Sciences and Professor Christian Berggreen from Technical University of Denmark in Copenhagen.

Your tasks:

  • Implementation and completion of an innovative doctoral project within the subject field of the European Green Deal at the Doctoral Center Engineering Sciences and Information Technologies (IWIT) at Merseburg University of Applied Sciences (first attempt at a doctorate)
  • Conducting research for the doctoral project using experimental characterization techniques to clarify the processing behaviour of thermoplastic sandwich structures and experimental and numerical methods for investigation of the subsequent structural behaviour of processed sandwich structures
  • Continuous coordination of the doctoral thesis with the supervising professors at the Doctoral Center IWIT at Merseburg University of Applied Sciences and at the Technical University of Denmark
  • Annual written proof of the processing status of the doctoral project
  • Presentation of the current state of the doctoral project at research colloquia
  • Proactive participation in the framework program of the International Graduate Academy in the state of Saxony-Anhalt and support of this framework program

Your profile:

  • good to very good academic university degree (diploma or master's degree, or comparable) preferably in mechanical engineering, focus on computational mechanics or aerospace engineering or lightweight structures
  • Ideally extensive and verifiable theoretical and methodological knowledge with a focus on  experimental investigation of structural behaviour of lightweight structures made of thermoplastic composites, simulation of structural behaviour of high loaded parts and characterization of processing behaviour of thermoplastic composite materials
  • Ideally experience in research on processing and structural performance of thermoplastic composite structures, especially sandwich structures
  • Good to very good written and spoken English language skills (B2-C1)
  • Good communication skills and a positive attitude towards interdisciplinary and international collaboration
  • Preferably an advanced admission process to the Doctoral Center IWIT
  • Independent, structured, careful and reliable way of working

Remuneration is in accordance with the collective agreement for the public service of the federal states (TV-L) up to pay group 13 TV-L if the relevant personal requirements are met. If the required academic degree is not available at the time of application, the position will be categorized as E 12 TV-L in the event of employment. Place of work is Merseburg.
