Metacognition - the holy grail for problem solving?
Problem solving is at the core of science and engineering practice.
Cultivating proficiency in problem solving is therefore an important, but challenging, goal of science and engineering education. To achieve this goal students must not only develop cognitive but also metacognitive abilities. Metacognition is the awareness of one's thought processes and an understanding of the patterns behind them.
In the workshop Tinne De Laet will share her experience with and research on stimulating students with reflective prompts during their physics problem solving.
She will challenge all participants to start designing learning activities that will stimulate metacognition and problem solving in their own courses.
Workshop leader: Prof. Dr. Tinne De Laet (KU Leuven (Belgium), Faculty of Engineering Science)
Tinne De Laet was recognized with the SEFI Francesco Maffioli Award of Excellence in Teaching of Engineering Education in 2023. She is associate professor at KU Leuven's Faculty of Engineering Science, member of the Leuven Engineering and Science Education Center (LESEC), and head of the Tutorial Services of Engineering Science at the same university. She also chairs the Engineering Education Research Special Interest Group of the European Society for Engineering Education (SEFI).
Her research interests include learning analytics, metacognition, self-regulation, and support for first-year students with a special focus to engineering and STEM.
